Port Theatre Nanaimo BC

Recently, thanks to CHEK TV, we had the opportunity to travel to Nanaimo for Guitar Summit appearing at The Port Theatre.

The concert was phenomenal, combining the talents of the Montréal Guitar Trio and the California Guitar Trio in a magical evening that ranged from re-worked scores of spaghetti westerns, to Pink Floyd's Echoes, original compositions evoking the northern reaches of the artic, and rollicking tunes replete with Québecois influences.

It was, however, the theatre itself that captured some of my attention. Built in 1998, the Port Theatre is an intimate 800 seat venue with near perfect sight lines and excellent acoustics. Concerts range from family friendly fare to modern dance, jazz standards, comedians and more. Tickets are very reasonably priced, and members benefit from significant discounts and a Spotlight series that allows them to purchase 4 tickets for $100.

We are fortunate in Victoria to have a wide range of theatre and performance options open to us. If, by chance, you find yourself venturing up Island for a get- away, I would highly recommend visiting the Port Theatre's website, and adding some live performance to your get-away schedule. You won't be disappointed.

Of note is the Port Theatre Society's "Theatre Angels" program that will "distribute over 4,000 complimentary tickets, through over fifty social service agencies, to local people on limited incomes, offering access to a wide variety of performances for children and adults alike".

13th Annual Gallery Walk Victoria BC

Victoria_gallery_walk_evite
For some people, it is the plethora of craft fairs or musical events that signals the advent of the holiday season.

For me, it has traditionally been Gallery Walk - an evening in late November, hosted by seven downtown Victoria art galleries who open their collections for viewing.

This year's walk, the 13th annual, is Thursday November 25th from 3-7pm. Of note is the introduction of a "passport" which participants in the walk can get stamped for a chance to win one of seven art works donated by the galleries.

Participating galleries are:

  1. Legacy Art Gallery and Café 630 Yates Street
  2. Madrona Gallery 606 View Street
  3. West End Gallery 1203 Broad Street
  4. View Art Gallery 104-860 View Street
  5. Alcherina Gallery 665 Fort Street AlcView Art Gallery
  6. Winchester Galleries Modern 758 Humboldt Street
  7. Winchester Galleries 796 Humboldt Street

No matter your artistic tastes, there is something for everyone on the walk - from the fine tribal art by Northwest Coast, Aboriginal Australian, and Papua New Guinea artists at Alcheringa, to traditional west coast First Nations prints and jewellery at Legacy, beautiful oils depicting eastern Canadian landscapes at West End, established and emerging Canadian artists at Madrona, contemporary modern art (including new media) at View, a panoply of 20th century modern and abstract art at Winchester Modern and Canadian historical and contemporary art at Winchester.

Take some time after work to linger (or head) downtown, immerse yourself in art, stroll from gallery to gallery, and enjoy some festive refreshments.

Pecha Kucha Victoria #4 Nov 25 2010

Pkn_4_nov_25_2010
I remember reading about Pecha Kucha from the Edmonton twitter feed over 1 1/2 years ago, and thinking "This would be so fabulous to have in Victoria".

What is Pecha Kucha?

"PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds."

But I'm not a graphic designer, architect or artist. Nor do I have good connections in the design community that would have enabled me to suggest the idea and collaborate with a team of people.

I continued to read about events in Vancouver, Edmonton and even Dawson City (pop. 1500) with envy.

Then, in early 2010, Elisa Yon, architect, Aleya Samji of Anonymous Advertising, and Amanda Smith, general manager of VEC, announced the first volume of Pecha Kucha at the Victoria Event Centre

From the beginning Pecha Kucha Nights in Victoria have been well attended, drawing from not only Victoria's design and social media communities, but also regular attendees of the Event Centre.

The format of 20 x 20 (20 slides and 20 seconds per slide) is extremely constraining, and yet, remarkable freeing. Images need to be bold and there is little room for missteps, as the slides scroll inexorably onward. This is most definitely NOT PowerPoint!

And so it is that Jaryd Zinkewich and I will take the plunge, Thursday November 25th, for our inaugural Pecha Kucha presentation, at PKN Victoria #4. We hope you will join us!

Doors open at 7pm for 7:30pm start.
